Nick Clegg: “Banning The Sun’s page three girls would be illiberal”

The Guardian has really put the boot in with this one. Last week Deputy PM Nick Clegg declined to back the campaign to ban the Sun’s Page Three on the grounds that a government should not dictate newspaper content. And true, a democratic government should never have the power to influence a free press.

However good Clegg’s intentions are with this one, it’s a very sensitive subject that strikes a chord with many female (and some male) voters. The Guardian has really gone to town pulling this out from his interview on Radio 5 and displaying it in bold (I think it was on page five of the print newspaper), parading these quotes in front of an already waning audience.

Is this irresponsible journalism or just bad public relations on the behalf of Nicky C?
